Buea is the political capital of the South West Province. It is the only capital of a province in Cameroon that is a rural town. All the other 9 capitals are located in urban towns but Buea is a rural town because it is still lacking in socio-economic development. There are about 150,000 people in Buea (including Muea; Tole; Miles 17, 16, 15, 14; Bova; and surrounding villages).

Buea used to be the capital of the then Southern Cameroon, when Cameroon was made up of two independent states: La Republic du Cameroon (under French control) and Southern Cameroon (under British control).

Buea is famous for the Mount Cameroon, the highest in Central Africa. Every, thousands of people gather in Buea in February from many countries of the world for the famous Mount Cameroon Race of Hope (ascending and descending the mountain). It is an active volcanic mountain and has erupted several times in the last 100 years.

The indigenes make up part of a people group called the Bakweri. To learn more about Bakweri people including culture, traditional rites, gods, sacrifices made annually, jujus, etc, click here.
