Sing Out!
(Winter 2006; Volume 49; Number 4)

[CD Review]

[CD Review]

Kaissa Dumbe Moulongo

==========================
ENGLISH

When an original voice rises up, music lovers are moved to listen. Now Kaissa is the one motivating a fast-growing audience, connecting through her soaring vocal talents and the irresistible African-inspired rhythms of her songs.

A child of the culturally rich Republic of Cameroon, Kaissa’s passion for music was fueled by the romance of Paris, where her family relocated when she was still young. Kaissa’s vocal ability began to turn heads in studios throughout the City of Lights, and when the opportunity to join French multi-media artist CharlElie Couture’s European tour arose, Kaissa stepped on the bus and never looked back.

Kaissa’s voice is a unique instrument – an electric mix of character and clarity, strength and fragility, total control and unbridled joy. Besides captivating audiences, her peers took notice as well, winning her a steady stream of work around the world with luminary artists such as: Manu Dibango, Papa Wemba, Salif Keita, Jean-Michel Jarre, Cesaria Evora, Sekouba Bambino, Martha Wash and Diana Ross to name a few.

Now New York-based, Kaissa has surrounded herself with a group of world-class musicians that are building on her vision. Her debut album, ‘Looking There’ was released in March 2004 by Sony Music South Africa and received rave reviews for its highly engaging vocals and pulsating African/Western rhythmic backdrops. Behind the beauty, however, there is always a message, with Kaissa’s poignant lyrics talking frankly about the human condition, speaking out against war and injustice, and calling gloriously to her native Cameroon for its love of life and the human spirit. Other heartfelt topics include the joy of playing music, and her connection to relatives both living and passed on, while the album’s title speaks to Kaissa’s own personal way of looking for others, or “beyond”.

Success breeds success, and ‘Looking There’ has led Kaissa to the next level, with featured slots on three Putumayo compilations including ‘Global Soul’, ‘World ‘Reggae’ and ‘Women of Africa’.  Her riveting performance at the XVI Africa Festival in Würzburg Germany in May, 2004 led critics to dub her “…one of the future great voices of Africa". The screen is also squarely in Kaissa’s sights, with multiple television appearances helping to expose her to an even wider audience.

With a steady calendar of live appearances scheduled and a new album in the works, this unforgettable artist continues to expand her sphere. Rest assured, Kaissa’s voice is original, and it is being heard.

[CD Review]

From a plain, rather uninspired piece of cover art comes a startlingly catchy and energetic album. Kaïssa is an artist previously unknown to me, although it soon becomes evident that her voice has been heard across a range of great African recordings as backing singer. Cameroonian in origin, now living in New York via a stint in Paris, Kaïssa owns a voice of substance and strength. LOOKING THERE is composed largely of her own writings, and as such incorporates several of the styles contemporary with a young African musician living in New York City.

There are many highlights on this record. ESSIMO is particularly raw due to its percussion-only instrumentation. Perhaps because of this, however, our first encounter with Kaïssa’s voice is all the more unhindered. She performs this track in a straight-forward, open and unadorned manner, thus laying bare the extent of her ability and the essence of her style. On the reggae track O SI KEKA, she retains a raw quality, but at times brings a softness, a velvety richness to parts. JOY further develops this more gentle approach, both in terms of composition and delivery. Stevie Wonder’s BIG BROTHER is a weak link in the chain, somehow lacking in drive and direction. SANGWAM is a personal favorite. Introspective in theme, majestic in performance, this track more than any other indicates where Kaïssa’s strengths lie and where her future compositions might best be focused.

Controversial as it may sound, there are a lot of mediocre artists of every conceivable origin making music and getting away with it. Kaïssa represents the antithesis. She is obviously a young musician who has served her time under some of the greats and has, in turn, taken her own time in putting her debut together. She has a considerable future ahead of her. Hats off.

Sing Out!
(Winter 2006; Volume 49; Number 4)

[CD Review]

For many years Camerooon-born Kaïssa worked as a backup singer for artists such as Cesaria Evora, Jean-Michel Jarre and Diana Ross. LOOKING THERE is her first solo CD, and judging from the quality of the tracks, it is a successful effort.
LOOKING THERE is a meditation on social injustice, love and religious faith. Kaïssa has a strong, appealing voice that resonates. Mostly sung in her native Cameronian and infused with African melodies, the songs swing from the uplifting SENGA and JOY to the breezy, reflective O SI KEKA and OMBWA TE. Her cover of Steve Wonder’s 1970s hit BIG BROTHER is an outstanding reinterpretation of this classic song, suffused with a bluesy-African tinged beat. If this is Kaïssa’s first solo CD, then we have much to look forward from her in the future. LOOKING THERE is a wonderful first effort.

[CD Review]

The debut album from Cameroonian songstress Kaissa, previously heard in America only on a stray Putumayo compilation or two. The sound is certainly informed by the Afro-pop traditions, but it´s built into more of an R&B piece through much of the course of the album. Kaissa´s voice is always the focus here, and a nice focus it is. Her phrasing is exceptional, and clarity and power are the hallmark of a strong African female vocalist. The original songs are all worth hearing, ranging from bouncing funk to nostalgic paeans. A stray
cover of Stevie Wonder´s "Big Brother" is perhaps the least noteworthy song here. While the performance and vocal quality are still at her surprisingly high level, Kaissa does seem to have some minor difficulties matching English phrasing with the song with her usual ease. Throughout, it´s an excellent album. Possibly difficult to dig up given the small release, but more than worth it for anyone interested in new African soul and related genres.

Kaïssa
So an African queen, the sparkling Cameroonian singer had them all at the Balattou! The intimacy of the space was favorable to a delightful proximity and so connected us to this foreigner who was performing in the context of another event of the Nuits d’Afrique program. Accompanied by her band which she presented as the United Nations, based on the diversity of backgrounds of its members, Kaissa proved to carry a rich and powerful voice sustained by a swinging dance typical to Africa; always challenged but never attained.
The artist, currently based in New York, expresses herself perfectly in French and sings in her native Cameroonian language. Her music is a combination of R&B and Jazz and is always founded on or coming through African melodies and sonorities.

Besides an unquestionable artistic talent, Kaissa is an authentic and natural beauty who could make superficial pop singers blush.

If you missed her or want to get to know her, you will have to go to New York where she gives most of her concerts. The Zinc Bar in Greenwich Village, does that sound familiar? It’s a little far… let’s hope that she is invited back here again next year.
