Henriette Ekwè (Nyangon) primée aux Etats-Unis

Le directeur de publication de Bebela y reçoit le 8 mars prochain, le prix du secrétaire d’Etat américain.
Un communiqué de presse rendu public hier par l’ambassade des Etats-Unis d’Amérique au Cameroun indique que Henriette Ekwè, directeur de publication de Bebela fait partie des dix femmes sélectionnées à travers le monde par le Département d’Etat américain pour recevoir cette distinction en 2011. Nominée par l’ambassade des Etats-Unis au Cameroun, la Camerounaise va recevoir sa distinction le 8 mars prochain, jour de la célébration de la Journée internationale de la femme au cours d’une cérémonie offerte par Mme Hillary Clinton, secrétaire d’Etat américain et à laquelle prendra part la Première dame des Etats-Unis Michelle Obama.
Pour Robert P. Jackson, ambassadeur des Etats-Unis au Cameroun, «Henriette a été choisie en raison de son courage exceptionnel, son engagement et son leadership dans la promotion de la démocratie, de la transparence, des droits de l’homme et l’état de droit au Cameroun. Elle est un témoignage vivant du courage des femmes à travers le monde qui se battent pour la justice sociale et la liberté politique», indique-t-il, précisant par ailleurs que. «A la fin des années 80 et au début des années 90, Henriette a été forcée à se cacher, a subi de menaces et a été emprisonnée pour son opposition au système de parti unique. Depuis lors, elle a continué à promouvoir la démocratie et la bonne gouvernance au Cameroun malgré les menaces et le harcèlement».
Un engagement qui, selon le chef de la mission diplomatique américaine devrait inspirer «les camerounais à s’inscrire sur les listes électorales et à participer pleinement aux prochaines élections législatives et présidentielles».
Le communiqué de l’ambassade américaine indique qu’en «plus de son combat pour la démocratie, Henriette Ekwe a été retenue à cause du rôle important qu’elle a joué dans l’avancement de la liberté de la presse et dans les organisations telles Transparency International».
Henriette Ekwè est la première Camerounaise sélectionnée pour cette prestigieuse distinction. Elle est en outre l’unique africaine pour l’édition 2011. Les autres récipiendaires viennent de Chine, de Biélorussie, Hongrie, Jordanie, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Kirghistan, Mexique et Cuba. Le prix du courage féminin a été créé en 2007 par Condoleezza Rice qui était à l’époque secrétaire d’Etat américain. Cette distinction a honoré chaque année les femmes à travers le monde qui ont fait preuve d’un courage exceptionnel, d’une force et d’un leadership dans la défense des droits de l’homme, de la justice sociale, et de l’égalité et l’avancement des femmes.

Henriette Ekwe to receive Award for International Women of Courage from U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton

The United States Embassy in Cameroon is pleased to announce that Cameroonian veteran journalist Henriette Ekwe, Publisher of Bebela, has been selected to receive an Award for International Women of Courage from U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on March 8 in Washington, D.C. Ekwe is one of ten women around the world who has been selected by the U.S. Department of State to receive this award in 2011. She was nominated by the U.S. Embassy in Yaounde and will be honored at a high profile awards ceremony hosted by Secretary Clinton and First Lady Michelle Obama in Washington, D.C. on International Women’s Day (March 8).
In announcing the award, U.S. Ambassador to Cameroon, Robert P. Jackson, stated:
“Henriette was selected because of her sustained and exceptional courage, commitment, and leadership in promoting democracy, transparency, human rights, and the rule of law in Cameroon. She is a living testimony of the courage of women around the world who are fighting for social justice and political freedom. Cameroon should be proud of her, and we hope this award will inspire Cameroonians to participate actively in the continued development of democracy in Cameroon. In the late-1980s and early 1990s, Henriette was forced into hiding, was the victim of physical abuse, and was imprisoned for opposing the one-party system. Since then she has continued to promote democracy and good governance in Cameroon in the face of continued threats and harassment. We hope Henriette’s life-long commitment to democracy will inspire Cameroonians to register to vote and to participate fully in Cameroon’s upcoming presidential and legislative elections.”
This is the first time a Cameroonian nominee has been selected for this prestigious award. Mrs. Ekwe is also the only honoree in 2011 from the African continent. The other award winners are from China, Belarus, Hungary, Jordan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Kyrgyzstan, Mexico, and Cuba.
In addition to her struggle for democracy, Ms. Ekwe was selected because of the important role she has played in advancing freedom of the press and in organizations such as Transparency International, the Cameroon Union of Journalists, and the Coalition for Transparency. The Embassy noted that in recent years, Ms. Ekwe has publicly advocated good governance and vigorously spoken out against corruption. “Henriette continues to be a beacon of light for freedom of expression and transparency in Cameroon,” said Ambassador Jackson. “All of Cameroon should be proud of her. All countries, including my own, need women of courage like Henriette in order to ensure that governments are accountable and that societies continue the quest for freedom, justice, peace, and equality.”
Started in 2007 by then-Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, the Secretary’s International Women of Courage awards have honored women each year from around the world who have demonstrated exceptional courage, strength, and leadership in advocating for human rights, social justice, and women’s equality and advancement. For the past four years, the U.S. has recognized women who have risked their lives and well-being to stop human trafficking, gender based violence, child marriage and corruption, as well as those who have been imprisoned, tortured, and threatened for standing up for justice, human rights, constitutional reforms, and the rule of law.
